An overview of innovation: Germany’s global agriculture projects
Data analysis, camel husbandry and more: Germany is using numerous international collaborative ventures to enhance interaction leading to new pathways in agriculture.
The Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Regional Identity funds more than 50 international projects worldwide – with a focus on combating hunger, but also via numerous other measures relating to social, ecological and economic transformation. Three exemplary projects that demonstrate the breadth of content:
India: An integrated approach to climate change
The German-Indian research project SIFS-CLIM analyses data whose findings provide support to the work of Indian smallholders in adapting to climate change. The data can for instance be used to investigate how biodiversity contributes to climate action. Arable farming, horticulture, agroforestry, livestock farming and aquaculture are coordinated to increase the productivity of the entire system. This approach also aims to enhance the production of nutrient-rich food based on natural cycles.
Kazakhstan: Modern milk production
The “Promoting Milk Expertise in Kazakhstan” project advises pilot farms in the Central Asian country on the development of modern, sustainable production systems geared towards animal welfare. At the same time, the aim is to increase milk production in a sustainable manner. This involves the use of new technologies in milk production, including the detailed inspection of milking equipment and ensuring milk hygiene. Information trips to Germany by Kazakh specialist and managers also form part of the project.
Ethiopia: Cooperation on camel husbandry
How can the health management of camels be systematically improved? What can be optimised in terms of husbandry and feeding? And what is the best way to store camel milk? These are aspects tackled by the SUSCAMI project, which combines the knowledge of the local population with scientific findings. Networks involving early career researchers from the participating universities in Kassel, Addis Abeba and Yabello are also to be formed.
