Germany at the WorldSkills Championship
The world’s best young skilled professionals show off their talents at the WorldSkills competition.
It is a good year since Germany’s national squad won the Football World Cup in Brazil. Now Germany is hoping to secure another win for itself in this Latin American country – not in football this time, but in joinery, welding, dressmaking or cookery, as mid-August 2015 will see the Brazilian city of São Paulo staging the 43rd World Skills competition, a kind of world cup for skilled professionals. More than 1,200 of the most highly skilled young men and women from over 60 countries will be taking part in 2015. The event will be just as competitive as any world cup, with florists, cooks, beauticians, landscape gardeners, mechatronic engineers, carpenters and many other skilled professionals pitting their talents against one another and vying for world championship titles and medals in 37 individual and team competitions. One important criterion is that they must not be older than 22, as WorldSkills is a competition for young skilled professionals.
A record even before the championship begins
The German team has already set a new record before the championship has even begun: Germany will be represented at the event by some 100 participants, experts and coaches – never before was Team Germany so big. “We have a fantastic team ready for the off – the best that Germany has to offer in their respective fields. Many of them have been spending several hours a day training rigorously for weeks now, working with their experts, coaches and instructors at home and competing with their professional peers and on an international level with championship participants from other WorldSkills countries. Team Germany is primed to go for gold”, said team manager Hubert Romer. As well as performing well in the championship, it is also a question of getting young men and women enthusiastic about careers in industry, handicrafts and the service sector, and of improving professional training worldwide. “We want to demonstrate the quality of our dual vocational training system on the international stage by performing well in the world cup in Brazil”, explained Romer.
