PRIZEWINNING DOCTORATE. Jonathan Donges has been recognized with the Donald L. Turcotte Award by the American Geophysical Union for his ground-breaking research on complex networks in the climate system. In the course of his doctoral research Donges applied mathematical analysis to data gained from deep-sea core samples and discovered how climate changes in Africa influenced the fate of ancestors of present-day humans millions of years ago. Donges is a member of staff at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research. The supervisor of his doctoral thesis, Professor Jürgen Kurths says proudly: “I’m really pleased that we have managed to provide the right kind of environment for such outstanding scientific creativity and innovative thought to thrive in.”
