Gathering expertise to fight data overload
Big data competence centres are being built in Berlin and Dresden.

Germany is realigning its research on big data and IT security. Big data competence centres are being built in Berlin and Dresden in 2014. Technische Universität Berlin is masterminding the Berlin Big Data Center (BBDC), and Technische Universität Dresden (TUD) is at the helm of the Competence Center for Scalable Data Services and Solutions (ScaDS). The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is funding the centres with a total of roughly 10 million euros. The BMBF is investing a further 20 million euros in promoting a number of different research projects on how to deal with big data not only in industrial production, but also in the life and earth sciences. Data-protection issues are being intensively monitored in these research projects.
