German universities are increasingly attracting students from the United States. This is one of the findings of a recent “Open Doors” report issued by the Institute of International Education (IIE). In the 2013-4 academic year, the number of Americans spending time in Germany in connection with studies rose by 3.5 percent. According to the report, 9,544 students from
the United States spent a semester abroad, worked as an intern, attended a summer school or took a language course in Germany – a new record.

The most popular places for American students to study in Germany are Berlin (962 US students in the winter semester 2012-3) and Baden-Württemberg (890 US students). This is also where the five universities with the most students from the United States are located – the Freie Universität and Humboldt University in Berlin (408 and 309 US students respectively), and the universities of Freiburg (189), Heidelberg (187) and Tübingen (151). Conversely, more and more German students are spending time in the United States. According to the IIE, in the 2013-4 academic year, 4,316 Germans spent time in the United States in connection with studies – another new record.
