Although universities in Berlin are especially popular, higher education institutions outside the German capital also offer outstanding conditions. This was a finding of the Humboldt ranking of the destinations chosen by foreign scholars in Germany: Berlin has three universities in the Top Ten, while institutions in smaller cities are also becoming more attractive for leading researchers. The ranking shows where researchers have spent stays on scholarships from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation over the past five years – an important indicator of international reputation. The first, second and third places are taken by the Freie Universität Berlin, the Humboldt Universität zu Berlin and the Technische Universität Berlin, respectively. Also among the first ten are the universities
of Bonn, Göttingen, Heidelberg, Bayreuth and Freiburg. “This shows how much trust there is around the world in the quality of German research,” says Helmut Schwarz, President of the Humboldt Foundation.
