Approximately 90 percent of the inhabitants of Germany are covered by statutory medical insurance. The interests of the medical insurance companies are represented by the GKV umbrella association in the political arena and towards such service providers as medical professionals, hospitals or pharmacies. Health Insurance Medical Service

When is an employee fit to work and when is he sick? The Health Insurance Medical Service (MDK - Medizinischer Dienst der Krankenversicherung) evaluates individual cases and advises the medical insurance companies on basic questions involving patient care.
