2016 Olympic Games – final moments
Many medals and moments of the Rio Olympic Games will be remembered.
Germany finished the Olympic Games in Rio with a total of 42 medals, including 17 gold. That put Germany in fifth place in the overall ranking. From the German perspective, the greatest moments included the gold medal in women’s beach volleyball (photograph), the silver medal in the men’s soccer event following a penalty shoot-out in the final against Brazil and the golden discus throw by Christoph Harting, after his brother Robert, the favourite, had to drop out as a result of injury. Successes in team sports meant that a third of German Olympic athletes flew home with a medal.
