AN UNUSUAL EXCURSION. Almost all the members of Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Cabinet travelled to Jerusalem for two days in late February for the fifth round of German-Israeli government consultations. The focus this time was on joint projects in the fields of science and research, trilateral development assistance, the environment and renewable energies, and youth exchange, among other things. Another important topic was the preparations for the jubilee year of 2015, which will mark 50 years of German-Israeli Relations. Yet another aim was to further consolidate bilateral collaboration. The foreign ministers, Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Avigdor Liberman, came to an arrangement on consular assistance. From now on, Israeli citizens abroad will be able to seek assistance from German consular posts if Israel does not have a representation of its own in that particular country.
