From alienation to reconciliation and friendship
Germany and Poland are celebrating 25 years of good neighbourliness
A quarter of a century ago Germany and Poland concluded a contract on “good neighbourliness and friendly collaboration” – an important chapter in the history of the two neighbouring countries. That contract formed the basis of the intensive political dialogue and the inter-societal contacts between Germany and Poland. “We cannot evaluate highly enough the long and difficult path that Germany and Poland have travelled together until opposition, alienation and misunderstanding finally became reconciliation, trust and even friendship,” says Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier. All this is to be celebrated in the jubilee year.
