In January 2016, Germany assumes the annually rotating Chairmanship of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) for the first time. The OSCE is a permanent intergovernmental peacekeeping conference. In 2015, in a speech before the German Bundestag, Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier named conventional arms control and confidence-building measures as the central tasks during Germany’s term of office.

So-called Super Election Sunday with state elections in three different German states – Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saxony-Anhalt – will take place on 13 March 2016. Will the Green-SPD coalition continue to govern with Minister-President Winfried Kretschmann in Baden-Württemberg? Can CDU candidate Julia Klöckner replace SPD Minister-President Malu Dreyer in Rhineland-Palatinate? Will the CDU remain the strongest party in Saxony-Anhalt? All these questions will be answered on Super Election Sunday in 2016.
