International law on their side
The 2014 Human Rights Award went to Alice Nkom.

The rights of homosexuals are particularly important to Alice Nkom. The German branch of Amnesty International has awarded its Human Rights Prize to the attorney for her commitment. “Alice Nkom is a courageous woman who fights for human rights. She is a role model for activists all over Africa,” emphasised Selmin Çalışkan, Director of Amnesty International Germany. In 2003, the Cameroonian activist founded the country’s first non-governmental organisation that supports the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people and offers them counselling and medical treatment. In addition, Alice Nkom defends people who are on trial because of their sexual orientation.
