For many years now he has called for international politics to focus more strongly on Africa. Now the former Federal president and expert on Africa Horst Köhler is to take up a post at the United Nations, as the new UN emissary for the conflict in the Western Sahara. Until March 2017 US diplomat Christopher Ross held the position. He resigned after eight years being the intermediary between Morocco and the rebel Polisario-Front movement as regards the status of the Western Sahara. In April 2017, the UN Security Council unanimously agreed to resume the negotiations between the two parties in conflict.
