Struggle to protect women
Congolese gynaecologist Denis Mukwege has received the European Parliament’s Sakharov Prize.
He has already helped thousands of rape victims in conflict zones in the Democratic Republic of Congo and stood up for their dignity. Congolese gynaecologist Denis Mukwege has been awarded the European Union’s Sakharov Prize for freedom of thought which is endowed with prize money of 50,000 euros. “A lack of punishment for rape in armed conflicts is something that must be finally ended,” demanded the German European Parliament President, Martin Schulz.
