Benedetta Berti is the epitome of international networking. The young Italian political scientist works for the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS) in Tel Aviv, Israel, but her expertise is in demand worldwide – for example, when she explains the structures of the “Islamic State” terror organisation for TED Talks. She has also been active for research institutes and NGOs in Latin America and the USA, focusing on human rights, conflicts and political violence. She is a member of several networks, including the Asian Forum on Global Governance and Munich Young Leaders, a joint initiative of the Körber Foundation and the Munich Security Conference. Benedetta Berti especially appreciates the chance to engage in dialogue at the Berlin Foreign Policy Forum: “It is an excellent opportunity to discuss global challenges with key decision-makers and opinion-formers.”

Organised jointly by the Federal Foreign Office and the Körber Foundation, the Berlin Foreign Policy Forum brings together an international circle of 200 high-ranking politicians, experts and journalists. At the same time, one quarter of the speakers and guests are under 40 years of age, including members of the Körber Foreign Policy Network and Munich Young Leaders. At this year’s Forum, Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier is discussing the future of German and European foreign policy with his Italian counterpart Paolo Gentiloni.

Numerous questions, international answers

Many different questions are being covered during the event: Is there a chance of a rapprochement between Russia and the EU? How can the many crises and conflicts in the Middle East be contained? What role will Asian countries play in global security policy challenges? Which foreign policy priorities will the new US Administration set? Among others, participants include the Polish Secretary of State for European Affairs, Konrad Szymański, and Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Foreign Secretary at the Indian Ministry of External Affairs. However, Washington Post correspondent Anne Gearan and Omid Nouripour, the Spokesman on Foreign Affairs of the Alliance 90/The Greens Parliamentary Group, will also be present, the latter speaking on the situation in the Near and Middle East following the nuclear agreement with Iran.

“The Berliner Foreign Policy Forum stands for effective public discussion of political issues,” says Omid Nouripour. Accordingly, the Forum will be broadcast on the Internet via a live videostream. Furthermore, during the event questions can be asked and comments made on Twitter using the hashtag #berlinfpf. However, for Benedetta Berti, whose work is currently focusing on the refugee crisis in the Middle East, something else is important: “The Berlin Foreign Policy Forum offers a chance to conduct diplomacy – and that is very helpful.”
