The establishment of a NATO battalion group in Lithuania and the fight against traffickers in the Aegean are two of the topics that participants will be discussing at the NATO summit in Warsaw on
8 and 9 July. Decisions on so-called reassurance measures in Eastern Europe will be implemented with the deployment of troops in Lithuania. Several options have been under discussion, one of which envisages a leading role for Germany. There are also plans for the deployment of up to 250 Bundeswehr soldiers as part of the battalion. Final decisions should be made in Warsaw. Furthermore, NATO intends to monitor the movements of refugees in the
waters between Greece and Turkey in
future. This was agreed during a meeting of NATO defence ministers in Brussels in February. Germany supported this proposal. The goal is to uncover how the traffickers operate and stop the gangs involved, says Federal
Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen.
