The cry for help from West African countries afflicted by the Ebola epidemic is being heard in Germany, and there is enormous willingness to help. Following an appeal by Federal Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen for an aid mission in regions affected by Ebola, more than 2,000 volunteers registered within a short space of time. The Federal Government is immediately setting aside
17 million euros for the fight against the epidemic and is stepping up its aid, for example with an airlift to Liberia together with France. In addition, in the crisis-hit region experts from the Robert Koch Institute and the Bernard Nocht Institute are helping to contain the dangerous illness. A study by the WHO and Imperial College revealed that by November 2014 the number of those infected will rise to more than 20,000.
