Berlin (dpa) – German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has welcomed the re-election of French President Emmanuel Macron, describing it as a clear commitment to Europe. “Félicitations, warmest congratulations, dear President @EmmanuelMacron”, the SPD politician wrote on Twitter on Sunday evening. “Your voters have also sent a strong signal of their commitment to Europe today. I am delighted that our good collaboration will continue!” Scholz was also the first foreign head of government to personally congratulate Macron in a telephone conversation on Sunday evening.

Other top German politicians from the governing coalition and the CDU/CSU likewise sent their congratulations. Bundestag President Bärbel Bas (SPD) talked on Twitter of “good news for Europe and for the continuation of the Franco-German friendship”.

“It was about fundamental questions of values”, German Finance Minister and FDP leader Christian Lindner wrote on Twitter. “The French have chosen Macron, making the united Europe the biggest winner in this election.” CDU leader Friedrich Merz also declared that Europe had won. “Now a new start for Franco-German cooperation is possible and necessary!”

Green party leader Omid Nouripour combined his congratulations to Macron with his view that the “normalisation of extremist discourse” in the French election campaign should be seen as a warning. “We must stand up with all our strength for democracy and freedom and defend our European values.”
