Education as the key to reconstruction
Germany is supporting international funding of the GPE with 45 million euros a year – so that children in crisis-stricken countries can learn again.
Berlin (d.de/dpa) - Whether in Gaza, Syria or Ukraine: Reconstruction after crises and wars can only succeed by fostering schools and strengthening education systems. To promote precisely this, today sees the launch of international replenishment of funding for the Global Partnership for Education (GPE). Development Minister Reem Alabali Radovan announced that Germany would contribute 45 million euros per year until 2032.
“Education is the best insurance against poverty and inequality”, according to Alabali Radovan. That is why Germany remains a reliable global partner in terms of good education. This funding was established in 2002 and underpins basic education in some 90 low-income partner countries.
Alabali Radovan was in Kyiv last week for talks in which she pledged further support for Ukraine’s reconstruction and economy. Two German companies that were there signed contracts in the energy sector. Alabali Radovan emphasised that reconstruction would “be impossible without a strong economy” and announced that Germany will continue to support Ukraine on its course towards reform and alignment towards the EU.
Ukraine has moreover further expanded its Patriot missile defence system with German assistance. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy thanked Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz for this support in protecting the population against Russian airstrikes.
