Berlin (dpa) – Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz has welcomed the agreement between the USA and Iran on a ceasefire and the opening of the Strait of Hormuz and said he would support further diplomatic efforts. “The aim now must be to negotiate a lasting end to the war in the coming days.” This can only be achieved through diplomatic means,” said Merz, adding that

such negotiations would serve to protect the Iranian civilian population and ensure security in the region. They could also avert a serious global energy crisis, said the Chancellor.

“The Federal Government supports these diplomatic efforts. To this end, it is in close coordination with the USA and other partners.” Germany would contribute in an appropriate manner to ensuring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, said Merz, adding that the Federal Government thanked Pakistan for mediating the agreement.

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul expressed similar views. On X, he wrote: “This is finally good news.”
