More German start-ups in 2019
Germany records an increase of 3.6 per cent in the number of new businesses in the first quarter of this year.
Frankfurt (dpa) - A greater number of new businesses have been launched in Germany in the first quarter of 2019 than a year earlier, the Federal Statistical Office said on Thursday.
Germany registered 156,400 new start-ups in the quarter, an increase of 3.6 per cent compared to the same period last year.
This included 34,800 businesses whose legal form and number of employees suggest they will be of "greater economic importance," the office said, up 2.8 per cent from the first quarter of 2018. At the same time, just 29,000 such sizeable businesses closed down, which is 3.3 per cent less than a year earlier.
The total number of business registrations also rose between January and March by 2.8 per cent to around 192,000. The number includes not just new start-ups but also cases of acquisitions, reorganisations or moves from one district to another.
