Erding (dpa) - Defence Minister Boris Pistorius stressed the need for technical flexibility and creativity at the opening of a Bundeswehr innovation centre in Erding near Munich. “Innovation isn’t a nice to have for the Bundeswehr. It’s a key to success”, said Pistorius. Aspects such as drone technology were now changing within weeks in the Ukraine war, he said, adding that

the new centre was a first step on a different pathway that departs from traditional procurement processes and that the region around the metropolis enabled networking with universities, companies and start-ups. Artificial intelligence plays a decisive role in any potential case of defence. The number of human casualties could be reduced if we “send technical assets in first”, stated Pistorius.

Armaments are also of crucial importance to Germany as an industrial nation. He believes both in the future of the German automotive sector, but also in the significance and future of the German arms industry. “Both will be decisive to our economic success in the next 15 years, but also to our importance as Germany in terms of security and foreign policy”, said the minister.
