Berlin (dpa) - German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) has promised to supply Ukraine with a modern air defence system to support it in its fight against the Russian aggressors. In addition, the Ukrainian armed forces will be provided with a modern tracking radar system capable of detecting artillery, Scholz told the Bundestag on Wednesday. He also announced that Germany would support the delivery of multiple rocket launchers to Ukraine announced by the USA “according to our technical possibilities”.

According to Scholz, the air defence system is the Iris-T made by the manufacturer Diehl. It is the most modern air defence system that Germany has at its disposal. “With it, we are putting Ukraine in a position to protect an entire major city from Russian air attacks,” Scholz said. Immediately after the war began, the German government had decided for the first time to supply German weapons in an ongoing war against a nuclear power. So far, among other things, anti-tank missiles, anti-aircraft missiles and many millions of rounds of ammunition have been delivered.

In recent weeks, the German government had also already made two promises to supply heavy weapons: 50 Gepard anti-aircraft tanks and 7 PzH 2000 self-propelled howitzers – modern artillery weapons with a range of 40 kilometres – are to be delivered to Ukraine.
