Wadephul calls for reliable assistance for Kyiv
The war in the Middle East may be dominating the headlines - but it was Europe’s greatest security challenge that was discussed in Warsaw yesterday.
Warsaw (d.de) – At an informal meeting of the Council of the Baltic Sea States (CBSS) in Warsaw yesterday, the foreign ministers of the Baltic Sea partners discussed continued and closely coordinated support for Ukraine.
“As much as the Gulf region is holding our attention, the greatest security policy challenge for Europe is still Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine,” German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said in a press statement issued prior to his departure. He explained that Germany still saw support for Ukraine as its priority and wished to underline this among the “strongest and clearest supporters” in the Council of the Baltic Sea States.
In this context, Wadephul criticised the delays to the 90 billion euros in assistance for Ukraine that the EU has already agreed to provide. “We can no longer afford to have this urgently needed assistance delayed through unacceptable obstructionism - which Hungary is currently practising - because the cost is accruing in actual lives due to a lack of important funding for national defence.”
