Berlin/Warsaw (dpa) – Given repeated infringements of NATO airspace by Russian aircraft and drones, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul and Defence Minister Boris Pistorius are travelling to Warsaw this Monday to attend a security congress.

Wadephul initially intends to deliberate in the Polish capital with his counterparts Jean-Noël Barrot (France) and Radoslaw Sikorski (Poland) in the so-called Weimar Triangle format. The aim is then for Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrij Sybiha to join the deliberations.

Wadephul stressed close partnership with the neighbouring country. Recent weeks have emphatically demonstrated how the security of both countries is intertwined: “We see Poland as much more than a mere neighbour – Poland is a close partner and friend with whom we stand shoulder to shoulder in defending Europe’s freedom”, said Wadephul.

The deliberations will also involve mutual support for Ukraine. Wadephul subsequently plans to give a speech on European security and deterrence capabilities at a security forum.
