It may sound like science fiction but is set to become a reality soon: an increasing number of carmakers are busy developing technologies destined to enable autonomous driving. In the North Rhine-Westphalian city of Wuppertal automotive components supplier Delphi is currently building a test track for self-driving cars. The plan is for the first self-propelled prototypes to hit the tarmac there in early 2016. Whether it is sections emulating motorway conditions or city streets complete with traffic lights, roundabouts and road signs – the future of driving is set to be tested under real-life conditions. There are plans to build a similar test track near the city of Ingolstadt in Bavaria.
