A directorial debut from Germany makes it to the competition “Un Certain Regard” at the famous film festival on the Côte d’Azur.
It’s an impressive success and a fantastic premiere for Katrin Gebbe, the graduate from Hamburg Media School: she is presenting her first feature film Tore tanzt in the section “Un Certain Regard” at the Cannes International Film Festival and is also competing for the Golden Camera for the best first feature film. Winners of this special prize include the American filmmaker Jim Jarmusch for Stranger than Paradise (1984) and Indian director Mira Nair for Salaam Bombay! (1988).
The German filmmaker Katrin Gebbe, who was born in 1983, drew inspiration for her film from a true occurrance. She tells the story of young Tore, who wants to live a Christian life together with religious punks in Hamburg and becomes embroiled in dramatic events. She says her work is “a battle between primal urges and self-sacrificing brotherly love.”
Katrin Gebbe, whose studies included film directing at the Hamburg Media School, was awarded the European Union Young CIVIS Media Prize for her short film Sores&Sin. She works as a freelance advert and feature film director and writes screenplays. Tore tanzt is also the first feature film for producer Verena Gräfe-Höft and her company Junafilm. The production partner is “Das kleine Fernsehspiel”, the section for new films with ZDF, one of Germany’s public-service TV stations.
The “Un Certain Regard” competition in Cannes is opening with a big name: Sofia Coppola is presenting her film The Bling Ring.
