German art historian Eike Schmidt appointed new Director of the world-famous Uffici in Florence.
A great honour for Eike Schmidt. The experienced international art historian from Germany has been appointed Director of the Uffici Gallery Collection in Florence. He is the famous museum’s very first foreign director and considers the post my “dream job”. The Uffici galleries are home to masterpieces of painting and sculpture – from Classical Antiquity to the Late Baroque. Each year, two million visitors flow through the gallery halls. That is also a real challenge for Eike Schmidt as he wants to make the museum more visitor-friendly. And he will no doubt succeed, as Schmidt, aged 47, has lived in Florence for seven years, knows the Italian system inside out, and is very well connected.
