Ole Scheeren is the “Lord of the Towers”. At least this is how the German architect is known in Asia, on account of his constructing, while still working for Rem Koolhaas, a high-rise that was considered virtually impossible to build. Together with 400 architects and specialist engineers he spent eight years working on the loop, a folded bow. The CCTV Tower was completed in Beijing in 2012 and in November 2013 was bestowed the “Best Skyscraper of the Year” award. In the meantime Scheeren has set up his own operation and has studios in Beijing and Hong Kong; he is currently building the MahaNakhon, the
tallest building in Bangkok, and the Angkasa Raya, a futuristic building
in close proximity to the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur. However, Scheeren is also a master of the small form. For the Film on the Rocks Yao Noi festival in the Thai lagoon Phang Nga in Phuket he designed the Archipelago Cinema, a floating cinema in a dramatic rocky landscape. In 2013, the cinema was voted the “coolest cinema in the world”.
