Quiet star
Volker Staab builds quietly but distinctively. The location is more important to him than spectacular structures.

Custom-made buildings. An architecture magazine says he is “probably Germany’s least well-known star architect.” Which is not surprising, since spectacular buildings and grand gestures are not Volker Staab’s style. But he knows how to use his architecture to emphasize the particular qualities of an location – in a quiet but sophisticated way. In 2013 he and his Berlin office received two commendations at the German Architecture Awards for their distinctive extension of a high-rise building at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences and for the Museum of the Bavarian Kings beneath the fairy-tale castle of Neuschwanstein.
