An exhibition at Museum Folkwang in Essen focuses attention on the drawings of the sculptor Richard Deacon for the first time.

29.09.2016

Richard Deacon is not really known for his small
designs, but rather for his expansive works of sculpture. The artist, who was born in Wales and also tutors international students as a lecturer at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, is considered one of the most important sculptors of the present time. At exhibition at Museum Folkwang in Essen is now focusing attention on his drawings for the first time. “Drawings and Prints 1968–2016”
presents 150 works from five decades. Some served as sketches for sculptures while others are independent works, but almost all are being displayed in public for
the first time.

Deacon produced an additional drawing especially for the opening of the exhibition. Working with pencil is very important to the artist: “I believe drawing and thinking are very close to each other.” Until 13 November 2016 visitors will be able to see for themselves whether this is
reflected in the exhibited works. During the same period the Langen Foundation in Neuss is showing sculptures
by Deacon dating from the last ten years. Current figures by the artist are also on display in the neighbouring sculpture hall of the Thomas Schütte Foundation.
