Open-air music festivals

Open-air music festivals attract people to unusual places – e.g. to the "Iron City".

Summer is here – and it's the season of open-air music festivals. Here is a small, subjective selection of this year's music meetings in such genres as Rock, Electro and Heavy Metal.

Wacken Open Air: A whole village turns into a festival. To begin with, the inhabitants of the village of Wacken in the far north of Germany may have felt a little ill at ease with the Heavy Metal fans who arrive every year in their tens of thousands to see and, above all, hear their idols. It gets pretty noisy. 31 July – 2 August 2014. www.wacken.com

Melt: The main advantage that the Melt festival has to offer is its venue: a former industrial site in Saxony-Anhalt called Ferropolis. Rock and electronic music will be heard in the "Iron City".  www.meltfestival.de

Sun Moon Stars: The makers and fans of electronic dance music will be meeting near a dam in Thuringia. Fatboy Slim and Marteria, among others, will be coming between 8 and 10 August 2014. www.sonnemondsterne.de

Eggs and bacon: The organisers' annoyance at the poor standard of breakfasts offered at other festivals explains the name of this one. This time round, the "Eier mit Speck" (Eggs and Bacon) festival in Viersen (North Rhine-Westphalia) offers not only a hot meal in the morning, but also music from Knorkator, for example. 25 – 27 July 2014. www.eiermitspeck.de
