Her acting is discreet, almost minimalistic, but she is nonetheless unusually versatile: Nina Hoss is always good for a surprise. The 37-year-old actress has a talent for playing enigmatic outsiders. In 2012 she demonstrated her impressive abilities in front of the camera in the title role of Barbara, a drama by director Christian Petzold. In the feature film Hoss plays a GDR doctor who is transferred to a hospital in the middle of nowhere as punishment for applying to emigrate to the West. Nina Hoss plays this strong woman in a striking but sensitive way. Barbara won the Silver Bear at the 2012 Berlinale and the film has also been submitted as the German contribution to the shortlist for an Oscar nomination as Best Foreign Language Film. It has also been nominated for the 2012 European Film Prize. Nina Hoss is also in the running for Best European Actress – competing among others against Hollywood star Kate Winslet. In 2013 the ensemble member of the Deutsches Theater in Berlin can also be seen in a German-British production based on John le Carré’s worldwide bestseller, A Most Wanted Man.
