Beyond Berlin Fashion Week

Fashion Week transforms Berlin into an international fashion stage. However, exciting new designs can also be found away from the large catwalks.

Fashion as a medium, dress code, projection area – twice a year the German capital presents fashion galore. Fashion enthusiasts, celebrities, buyers, designers and media people come together for Berlin Fashion Week and trade shows like Bread & Butter, Greenshowroom or the Ethical Fashion Show. While many shows and events during Berlin Fashion Week are reserved for invited guests, the Wedding Dress fashion festival opens its doors to everyone.

Don’t be confused by the festival’s name: Wedding Dress has nothing to do with getting married. The fringe festival at the end of Berlin Fashion Week takes place in the middle of the district of Wedding. Although Brunnenstrasse is not in a high-gloss part of the German capital, it is a small, but refined island of creativity. Berlin-based housing company Degewo attracted artists, fashion designers and restaurateurs to the district – with favourable rents and the fashion festival. Since 2006, young creatives have presented their interpretations of “urban fashion and lifestyle” at Wedding Dress parallel to the large fashion shows at the Brandenburg Gate. Some 150 designers and exhibitors show their collections in a large designer loft and at the Fashion Market in Brunnenstrasse.

Wedding Dress is not the only event away from the large and more conventional shows. In Berlin innovative young designers present their self-produced goods at many design markets with names like TrendMafia, SideSeeing, Nowkoelln Flowmarkt or handmade supermarket. Sometimes twice a month, sometimes only once a year, they offer original creations that have little in common with off-the-peg, ready-to-wear products.
