Light and shade are closely linked. Many cities are brightly lit at night – in the interests of safety. As a result,
the sky never gets completely dark in industrialised countries. Researchers call this phenomenon “light pollution” and warn about its negative consequences for the environment. UNESCO has decided to draw attention to both the dangers and the vital significance of light and has declared the year 2015 the International Year of Light. A large number of events are planned. In Berlin, for example, an LED catwalk will be installed for presenting lighting innovations. And Dresden will focus on the phenomenon of light with an exhibition called “Hi Lights!”, which will underscore light’s importance for science, technology and culture.
