Skilled workers are sought-after in Germany. For this reason the federal government has made securing qualified professionals a goal of its policies and supports the selective immigration of foreign professionals.

Thanks to medical advancement, people in Germany are getting ever older. At the same time however fewer children are being born nowadays, meaning that in the long term total population is falling. This demographic change presents the labour market with major challenges: The German Federal Employment Agency (Bundesagentur für Arbeit, BA) has calculated that by 2025 there will be more than six million fewer workers available in Germany – if no measures are taken. In view of this, in 2011 the federal government launched a concept to secure skilled professionals. It defines objectives and measures intended to secure an adequate supply of qualified workers. A key component is the “Fachkräfte-Offensive” campaign launched in 2012 by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (Bundesministerium für Arbeit und Soziales, BMAS) and Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Energie, BMWi) together with the BA. The German-language website “Fachkräfte-Offensive” run by the BMAS provides information on the campaign’s support and advisory programmes.

The “Make it in Germany” portal, an initiative of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, is particularly interesting. The site provides information on career opportunities in Germany to qualified professionals interesting in moving here in German and English – parts of which are translated into six further languages, including Portuguese and Indonesian: How can foreign specialists find a job? What formal requirements relating to a visa, entry, language skills or the recognition of foreign qualifications do they need to fulfil? What is it like to live in Germany?
