Tempelhof is buzzing. It’s been a long time since a plane took off from here, but the former airport still draws the crowds. In the early summer, the hangars and apron at this legendary airport in Berlin will serve as the stage for the DMY International Design Festival, where more than 500 creative designers, companies, universities and foundations from 30 different countries will be presenting their latest projects. However, the festival is not only about showing off and finding buyers for the coolest lamps or swanky new sofas. One thing that visitors to the festival value above all is that it also serves as an innovation pool and has a laboratory character, aiming to give an insight into the design of the future. “No designer just now can afford not to engage with issues such as sustainability and ecology”, says festival founder Jörg Suermann.

DMY stands for “daily, monthly, yearly” and is a platform that showcases young designers worldwide all year round. In 2003, DMY spawned the first festival, initially as a small-scale and somewhat improvised happening in Berlin. Thanks to the city’s creative atmosphere, it evolved to become one of the most important design institutions in Germany. Since 2012, DMY has also staged the “Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany”, bestowed every autumn since 1969 by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology. A special exhibition at the festival in Tempelhof will show all the objects submitted for the award and will present the nominees.

For the past five years, the festival has also featured a special country focus: in 2013, it is Poland’s turn in the spotlight. In cooperation with the Polish Institute Berlin, DMY offers an insight into the design scene in Germany’s neighbour: more than 40 creative designers, studios, companies and universities present contemporary design produced in Poland.
