Wiesbaden (dpa) – Germany is increasingly generating electricity from renewable energies. In the first half of 2024, electricity generated from wind power, solar, hydro and biomass accounted for a record 61.5 percent of total electricity production, according to Germany’s Federal Statistical Office.

Wind power accounted for the biggest share of all the energy sources, at 33 percent of total production. 73.4 billion kilowatt hours were generated in that very windy half year, an increase of 11.9 percent on the same period last year.

Thanks to the installation of additional capacities, the amount of electricity produced by photovoltaic plants also rose by 8.3 percent to 30.5 billion kilowatt hours. That equates to just shy of 14 percent of total electricity production.
