Call for the preservation of Europe
At the former Neuengamme Concentration Camp, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz appeals for a Europe united in peace 80 years after the end of the Second World War.

Hamburg (dpa) - German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has called for the defence and preservation of Europe against the background of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and of global autocratic ambitions. This should involve Germany assuming particular responsibility, said the outgoing Chancellor during a commemoration ceremony at the Neuengamme Concentration Camp Memorial in Hamburg on the 80th anniversary of the end of war and liberation of the concentration camp.
“One of the absolutely key lessons from that war masterminded by Germany, from the National Socialist tyranny, from the murder of millions of innocent women, children and men is our deep conviction that this continent, that we Europeans must once and for all leave war behind us”, said Scholz in front of several hundred international guests, including Holocaust survivors and the relatives of victims from France, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Poland, Ukraine, Israel and other countries.
