Berlin (d.de) - Germany’s Environment State Secretary Jochen Flasbarth (photo) departed yesterday on a visit to Brazil, G20 presidency holder South Africa and China with a view to stepping up diplomacy on key climate issues and preparing for the UN Climate Change Conference (COP30), which will be taking place in Belém in Brazil this autumn. The international negotiations aimed at reaching a global agreement on plastics, which is to be concluded in Geneva in August, are another reason for his trip.

“In view of the current heatwave in Germany and Europe, it is obvious that progress must be made on climate action. Given the crisis-plagued world situation, however, containing climate change risks slipping off the political agenda in some places. Yet climate action is crucial to prevent many crises,” Flasbarth said ahead of his trip.

He added that international climate action remained a key issue for Germany’s Federal Government. “I am now seeking direct dialogue with our partners so as to deepen our discussions and set the agenda for a successful COP30,” explained Flasbarth. Among other things, a meeting with the COP30 presidency is planned.
