Germany agrees to funding for US arms for Ukraine
Defence Minister Boris Pistorius has announced military aid worth an additional €150 million for Ukraine as it resists the Russian invasion.
Berlin (dpa, d.de) – Germany intends to provide further funding worth hundreds of millions of euros to supply US arms and munitions to Ukraine. An agreement had been reached to contribute at least €150 million to a new package as part of the PURL initiative, said Defence Minister Boris Pistorius following a meeting of the so-called Group of Five yesterday. The group consists of the defence ministers of Germany, France, the UK, Italy and Poland, along with the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas. Ukraine’s Defence Minister Denys Shmyhal also joined the meeting as a guest to report on the situation in his country.
PURL stands for “Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List”. The initiative provides a means to sell arms and munitions manufactured in the US to Canada and European allies. With reference to Russia’s latest attacks on Ukraine, Pistorius said the Russian President Vladimir Putin’s priority now was very obviously to make winter as unbearable as possible for Ukraine and to break Ukrainians’ will to continue resisting.
