Germany and Brazil are forging closer bonds
Germany and Brazil are enhancing their cooperation. Activities are to focus on trade, defence and climate action.
Hanover (dpa) – Germany and Brazil would like to considerably enhance their strategic partnership. This was announced by Friedrich Merz and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva following consultations between the two countries’ governments that took place on the sidelines of Hannover Messe.
“Close cooperation between our countries is now more important than ever before, in these times in which the world order is undergoing such fundamental changes. We want to reinforce the ways in which we can benefit from each other and to form a network of strong partners,” Merz said.
He added that these activities would focus on economic cooperation. Planning provides for considerably greater trade volumes, which will be supported by the EU-Mercosur agreement, among other aspects. The two countries also plan to cooperate more closely in the area of critical raw materials. Brazil is considered a key supplier of rare earths.
The two countries have also been intensifying their ties in the area of defence. Brazil has expressed an interest in acquiring further German-made frigates, as well as in cooperation concerning air defence systems and drone technology.
Collaboration is also to be expanded in a number of fields that are relevant to future development. The two governments signed six declarations of intent on issues including the climate, energy, raw materials, space travel, marine research and quantum technology.
At the same time, both countries are dedicated to climate action. The Tropical Forest Forever Facility is to be established as a funding instrument that is designed to provide financial support for the preservation of tropical forests.
Both sides also stated that they would welcome a reform of the United Nations.
