Körber Prize awarded to neuroscientist Erin Schuman
The US brain researcher Erin Schuman works in Germany. She is the recipient of the 2024 Körber European Science Prize.
Hamburg (dpa) - In recognition of work that revolutionised the understanding of the brain and many other achievements, the US neuroscientist will be awarded the prestigious 2024 Körber European Science Prize in Hamburg today. Schuman is Director of the Max Planck Institute for Brain Research in Frankfurt. The award is worth €1m. The Körber Foundation is honouring Schuman as a pioneer in neurobiology, noting her discovery of how proteins are formed at the connections between neurons. According to the foundation, the mechanism which takes place at synapses is the basis for how neurons communicate and makes memory storage and brain development possible. The foundation reports that Schuman plans to use the prize money to investigate disease-related changes in proteins within neurons. According to the statement, discoveries in this area could lead to new treatments.
