Cannes (dpa) – Berlin-based filmmaker Mascha Schilinski (pictured) could hardly believe it when she heard she had received an award at the Cannes Film Festival. “I was afraid I’d misheard,” said the 41-year-old. "It was kind of a surreal moment – simply wonderful."

Schilinski was awarded the Jury Prize for her drama Sound of Falling. She shares the prize with filmmaker Oliver Laxe (Sirât).

Schilinski used the award ceremony to make a political statement: “We wish to dedicate this prize to everyone living in places where making films is difficult, nearly impossible or entirely impossible – especially to young filmmakers, and in particular women: your voices matter. Don’t give up on them.”

Sound of Falling (German title: In die Sonne schauen) tells the story of four young women living on a farm in the Altmark region during different periods in history. It explores themes of domestic violence, suppressed desires and inherited trauma experienced by the four women. The film is due for release in German cinemas on 11 September.
