Berlin (dpa) – Germany’s Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has expressed her sorrow at the explosion that killed two people in Poland near the border with Ukraine. “My thoughts are with Poland, our close ally and neighbour,” Baerbock said. “We are monitoring the situation closely and are in contact with our Polish friends and Nato allies.” German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called for a thorough investigation of the incident in which, according to current knowledge, a Ukrainian defensive missile launched to ward off Russian missiles had come down in Poland. Scholz also stressed the importance of not losing sight of the cause of the missile strike. “It is important for us all to realise that none of this would have happened without the Russian war against Ukraine, without the missiles that are now being fired intensively and on a large scale at Ukrainian infrastructure.”
