Berlin (dpa) - A German lawmaker said Friday that he has "no preconceptions" about the US election that he has been tasked with monitoring on behalf of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).
Michael Link, a member of the Bundestag parliament for the pro-business Free Democrats (FDP), has been involved in monitoring at least 100 elections including recent polls in Russia and Ukraine.
"As international monitors, we do not bring any preconceptions to our work," Link told the Stuttgarter Zeitung newspaper on Friday, admitting however that he is no fan of President Donald Trump's political style.
Link's extensive experience, which also includes the 2017 referendum in Turkey that helped President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expand his powers, prompted the OSCE to appoint him as head of a 100-strong mission monitoring the November 3 poll in the US.
Before international travel ground to a halt due to coronavirus-related border closures, Link travelled to the US regularly in order to hold talks with both Democrats and Republicans.
Trump has sought to undermine the legitimacy of the US elections in recent weeks as a record number of Americans prepare to cast postal votes.
