Berlin (dpa) - Germany’s Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has welcomed the lifting of Hungary’s blockade of the EU support package worth billions of euros for Ukraine: “Hungary is back in the European family and we can send a clear signal of support to Ukraine. Ukraine, which after all is defending our freedom, our security.”

Wadephul said that pressure on Russia could now also be increased with the 20th sanctions package. Russia must recognise the signs of the times, he added. “If Russia weighs up its options and notes just what this war is also costing the country itself, then it would be a wise decision to show willingness to negotiate now.”

Hungary had lifted its months-long blockade of the planned EU support package for Ukraine. In Brussels, the government of outgoing Prime Minister Viktor Orban backed a decision intended to make possible a loan of up to 90 billion euros. In addition, the permanent representatives of EU states in Brussels were able to set in motion a new package of sanctions against Russia.
