Architecture for
a new “Heimat”

Building the future together: “Making Heimat. Germany, Arrival Country” at the German Pavilion.

11.07.2016

“Making Heimat. Germany, Arrival Country”: from 28 May to 27 November 2016, the German Pavilion will be appearing at the 15th Architecture Biennale in Venice with an exhibition of which even the title is an allusion to the conflicts between the familiar and
the new. The pavilion will present proposals by architects and town planners concerning how best to accommodate and integrate refugees. It will also highlight the conditions needed to create lively and liveable urban districts. Eight theses that the pavilion team from the Deutsches Architekturmuseum developed in cooperation with the Canadian-British author Doug Saunders explore the architectural and
urban conditions that are needed in the “arrival cities” to ensure the successful integration of immigrants in Germany. As a symbol of openness, four walls were knocked through to create new entrances to the German Pavilion.
