Film Cologne is celebrating its premiere: although avant-garde artists experimented with the technical possibilities and expressive forms of the moving image at the start of the 20th century, film has only been regarded as an art form beyond the film industry for the past 50 years. “Gerry Schum  was a pioneer in the communication and dissemination of this art form when he founded the Fernsehgalerie at the end of the 1960s in Cologne. In contrast to the fixed-space gallery, it existed only in the form of four TV transmissions,” explains Daniel Hug, Director of Art Cologne.

The largest art fair in Germany is extending its scope in 2014 with the new section Film Cologne. The range of works on show embraces the past 50 years of video art, thus doing justice to the history of this art form as well. Works by international artists are being shown at a film bar in the fair’s entrance area. These artists include Keren Cytter from Israel, Matthew Stone from America and Sven Johne from Berlin. The Film Cologne programme will be broadcast live and in a permanent loop throughout the whole of the fair by the art channel “Souvenirs from earth” (online at www.sfe.tv). “We want to reconnect with Gerry Schum’s original idea of making art visible for a larger public, with the gallery and the museum space as the starting point, whilst stimulating discussions,” Daniel Hug explains.

200 galleries from 25 countries

In its classic programme Art Cologne is demonstrating its strengths: more than 200 galleries from 25 countries are presenting masterpieces of classic modern and post-war art, as well as famous names and young representatives of the contemporary art world. For instance, following a long absence, Berlin’s Contemporary Fine Arts (CFA) gallery is once again a guest in Cologne. It is dedicating solo shows to the brothers Gert and Uwe Tobias, who are acknowledged revivers of the woodcut, and the Danish artist Tal R. Works by the international art scene star Jeff Koons are on show at the stand of Carolina Nitsch (New York).
