The biennial of lighting culture
At the Luminale in Frankfurt and Offenbach, designers architects, lighting designers and artists create artwork of light.
Colorful florescent tubes dancing ballets in the dark to electronic beats and from which impressive works of art emerge: the installation GRID by the light artist Christopher Bauder and the composer Robert Henke is a highlight of the biennial of lighting culture Luminale. Every two years Frankfurt and the neighboring city of Offenbach blaze with a very special splendor. The two Hessian cities are then transformed into seas of light, thrilling residents and tourists. Parallel to “Light + Building”, the world’s foremost fair for lighting and building technology, designers, architects, lighting designers and artists experiment with the medium of light and present their works at urban locations. The Luminale, which was launched in 2002, has grown steadily in popularity. In 2014 the event had around 250,000 visitors.
“Flash-bulb flurry” at the cathedral
From a light-meditation space to a “flash-bulb flurry” at the cathedral: in 2016 the churches in Frankfurt will be literally illuminated. The light installations revolve round the euro, round the buildings of the European Central Bank and the Deutsche Bank. The Korean artist Jeongmoon Choi creates a completely new experience of space in her UV light installation Drawing in Space. At a PechaKucha Night, a new, entertaining form of a lecture, international artists present their ideas and concepts at high speed. Equally short and crisp are the presentations in a “Science Slam” by University of Frankfurt scientists about their research on light. At the 2016 Luminale, visitors can see a total of more than 200 lighting projects and light installations.
